Baby book ideas

Hi all, I have posted a few times to you all and have always received great responses so here I go again....
I have two dd's - dd1 is 11 yrs and dd2 is 6 weeks and want to sort out their baby books. I did dd1's when she was small but due to moving and carelessness it looks a bit tatty and so would like to replace it and also combine her scrap book (which is very basic).
I have looked around the shops and the books available to buy just don't feel personal enough so I thought I might try my hand at making them - I am off for a year afterall! Thing is although I consider myself to be quite arty I haven't done anything much for years and don't know where to start.
My 'skills':
I can sew enough to get by and have a sewing machine. I can draw still life and possibly draw from imagination - used to make up characters in high school. I haven't painted for years. Just learning to knit and can crochet a little. I am not arty enough to pull off a decent collage or anything like that.
Taste:
I have two extreme tastes at the moment - either very retro or very cottage industry.
Any suggestions or links to examples would be great. I would ideally like to buy some recycled ( elephant dung) texturised paper i have seen in notebooks in Oxfam and make the cover etc. and go on from there
Many thanks, angelpye
