Wait for P45 or fill in P46

I have a temp job starting soon. The agency didn't mention to me about filling in a P46.

Should I assume that the staff would prefer to wait for the P45? I will give it to the agency when I get it in the post. The P45 will be from the Job Centre. Or should I fill in the P46?

Fill out the P46. Once your P45 arrives it will superseed it anyway but at least you will still be receiving some allowances (presuming you dont have another job or pension).

Thanks for the reply. I will go to the agency to fill in a P46 then, or go on the internet, as I saw one. Not sure which one 'kind' they want. Why didn't they mention the P46 to me? Does it really make a difference if I don't fill in a P46?

    I don't have another job.

When I get paid weekly, and don't have a P45 by then, I will get taxed a lot. After giving in the P45 when it arrives, I should get some sort of 'refund' right?

If you dont hand in a P46 then you will be taxed at basic rate which means all of your wage. Once your P45 is received providing that its not on a W1 basis then yes, you should receive a rebate in your wage but only if that is sorted out before the end of the tax year (april 5th).

There is only one kind of P46 and you will find one you can print off on the HMRC website :)

I will fill in the P46 before I start my job. Then when I receive the P45 from JCP, I will give it to the employer to change the tax code.

When taxing all of my wages, that means I can't get a refund right?

If your P45 is from the JCP its very likely your code will be on a W1 basis which means no refund until the tax office tell your employer to remove this.

You may have to claim the rebate from HMRC once we are in the new tax yer.

You will get a refund one way or another of everything you have overpaid.

My contract ends in the middle of April, so it's in the new tax year.

How do I claim the revate from HMRC once the next tax year begins?

How is the refund done? Is it automatic?

You will need to write to them - if a refund is due they will send you a cheque.

    Ok. Thanks.

Not sure if you have been on JSA before. How many weeks do I have to wait for my P45 from them? I will be signing off by phone. Do I need to go to my last sign-on before I start my job?

I really dont know much about JSA - the benefits board will help you there - I would imagine you will still have to go to your sign on appointment and if so I would ask them then how long they will take to issue your P45.

I got accepted for another job, which is a temp to perm position. I accepted that one instead. They said all the tax stuff will be sorted out for me.

Does this mean I don't need to fill in the P46? :o

I will decline the other job that has a start date of Feb, and ends in April. I sent them a P46 by the way, as I got sent one from the employer.
