I came to this thread a little late. I just wanted to say that I think you have done the right thing. It was probably hard to do, but at least you can now find another flat, which will probably be even better.

Not specifically related to this, but worth saying I think.
Flats are a bit of a minefield - I discovered about 3 weeks after buying my first home that the freeholder was an absolute crook, and he tried it on a few times including some spurious charges for roof repairs to be carried out by another company he was involved with. We ended up being on Watchdog (this was in the early 1990s). Eventually we managed to buy the lease collectively, but it's a problem because you have very little comeback against a freeholder.
The one thing I would really stress is the importance of researching the freeholder or management agencies thoroughly and if in any doubt about them bail out. Having problems with your home is bad enough, but if the leaseholder is more interested in lining their pockets than sorting out problems, you will have stress beyond belief. Not worth it at all.0
