Open University Funding Question

Hi new here please be gentle.
I'm interested in doing a short 10 point course Y160 - Understang the arts. I'm an at home carer getting carers allowance. My partner and I live with my dad whom I care for.
My question is can I get financial support for my course. My partner earns well probably over the threshold, however he does not support me financailly at all. I only get the £53.30 per week CA.
I don't want to break the law and claim if my partner earns over the limit, yet it's quite despressing to pay as I'm on a low income. Any advise welcome.

I do want to do what is right !

It is based on household income. I had to put my husbands earnings on the form when I've applied for financial support.
Here I go again on my own....

I think it is the case that because you live with your partner they take his income into consideration.
Prepared to be told I am wrong though.

  • Thanks for the reply Becles. That's helped clear that up.
I've finally enrolled and paid up at the same time.
  • I appreciate that you've already paid for this course, but if you decide to do another one it's worth remembering that you can use your Tesco Clubcard points to pay OU course fees. They're worth 4* their face value.
  • Thanks everyone for the replies. In the future, I think tesco points will turn out to be a big help to me.

Also you can usually pay with the Open University Student Budget Account (OUSBA). At the moment it's 5% interest, but if you're able to pay the full amount off early there's no early settlement figure.
For the short courses (10-20 point), you'll have to phone the Student Registration & Enquiry Service (0845 3006090) to ask for a short course OUSBA form.

If you go on to do a longer course, it's always worth getting in early and applying for financial support, as if you get declined or don't get awarded as much as you'd hoped, there's no obligation to do the course.

(It's a slow day on the enquiry desk today ;))
    :)
  • Thanks for the extra info Pinzy. Very helpful.
