It was the basic element that we are entitled to. I'd just like to say as some people seem to think I am so rich I don't need this money that I took my finals at university at 7 months pregnant, gave birth to my eldest daughter and have worked full time since she was 6 weeks old and I was 23 (she is 11 1/2 and such a credit to me) so that I was providing for my family. As soon as I could I bought us a home , I pay my pension and plan for my old age and my childrens future. I earn good money (but so much has gone out on mortgage and childcare) -but I have worked hard for it and made sacrifices. So if people do want to judge then please do it with all of the facts. My tax credit money is being aved up for my daughters university fees, I thought that was the responsible thing to do.

Guess what? I did all this too and had my son at 18 and wish I could forget to check my tax credits have come in. My dh and I are paid the bare minimum of tax credits and certainly notice them coming in.
Just because you pay tax does not mean that you are owed some of it back. If you pay £500 per month in tax you are probably a higher rate tax payer meaning you will more than likely earn over the threashold...either that or you are on an incorrect tax code.

I'm sorry if I come across as being rude but the fact you had a daughter at 23 and went to uni is pretty common.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

wins - peroni bottle opener, peroni bowl, peroni coastersx2 and a vodkat cocktail kit,
