Ok back now, is the problem the drive will spin but won't read the disk?0

Im pretty sure "RosettaStoneDaemon.exe" isnt doing your computer any good:idea:0

You have two DVD's 1 reader and 1 reader/writer, it's an old machine so I'll assume they are both IDE drives, no ones changed the jumpers, and neither have a disk jammed in them, and they are both showing in the control panel/hardware section.
Are you saying that neither will read a [ known to be good ] CD ?
Assuming you can get into the O/S go to the control panel/hardware/device manager/DVD-CD ROM drives. Right [ not left ] click on them and hit the delete key on your keyboard. Ignore the warning. Shut [ not reboot ] the computer down.
Restart the computer from cold if it's just a driver/IRQ issue the O/S will re-find and re-allocate them for you.
When you do ""Restart the computer from cold"" are both drives showing in the black & white DOS screen ?Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. That depends on wether you are currently learning a language with Rosetta Stone language Software - Wouldn't recommend changing/deleting this entry if you arethe software may have modified kernel just the same as Java and Talk Talk - If however you have never installed such software then yes, maybe a problem...NT services are important to the smooth running of some software.
The thing with random re-starts is exactly that, they are random/annoying/frustrating and could easily be something as simple software issue - or yes, potential power supply issue..blah blah - Too random...trial and error is the only way with such issues in my experience - Only takes a moment to check in your Control panel>System>Device manager for any yellow triangles in the list - personally I'd be inclined do that first, ensure all your hardware is properly installed, and device drivers are up to date. To be sure, uninstall the failing hardware and re-start your PC, Windows should detect them on start up and install the relevant driverrs for you  You could easy spend hours and make yourself mental analysing all those HJT log entries, just to find that windows updates made all those changes to your registry
Would help to know what Operating System you have installed (XP I would assume) - Also the approximate age of this machine, some hardware has limited 'shelf life' just like most things (including me) and simply wears out over time.0 -
Look inside your case again, and look at the cables for the CD drives - specifically the wide, grey ribbon cable which looks like this:
Make sure it is plugged in properly by giving a reasonably firm push, and check that the power cable (the smaller plug with red, yellow and two black wires) is plugged in properly too. Do this for both drives.
When you turn your machine on, does it ask you to press F2 or DEL to enter setup? It might be another key, but either way press that key to enter setup when you turn the machine on, and let us know what you see.Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.0 -
Thanks everyone forthe replies and suggestions. I have pushed the cables in as some have suggested to see if they are not loose and everything seems ok there.
Yes I have put in brand new music cd's and they just spin but the pc doesn't pick them up, so still no joy. oh and the spinning sound is rather harsh as if it is about to break the cd.0 -
Have you looked in Device Manager to see if the drives are showing any errors? There is a common bug in almost every version of Windows that causes CD/DVD drives to suddenly stop working.
If this is what you are experiencing, the symptoms are described here, along with the steps you need to take to fix the problem.0 -
Hi everyone thanks for your replies and I have checked the device manager and it doesn't show any errors. My pc is about 7 years old, would that have anything to do with it?
I have tried everything I can think of and used the suggestions that people have kindly given me on this thread but still no joy. So I have decided to buy a new one and am looking at the one in maplin made by sony at £39.99. Is this a good price or can anyone suggest a good one that's a reasonable price? Many thanks for replies.0 -
If you're replacing the drive I'd order the cheapest one from ebuyer.
http://www.ebuyer.com/search?store=2&cat=27&subcat=183
It's less than half the price of the Sony. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Thanks for that, but which one is the best? and is the website reliable?0
