Help I can't open my tower casing!

Options
Hi all,

I have a pc with two dvd drives, one is a dvd+rw and one drive is just a dvd-rom drive. Both of them have stopped working for some reason. Now the problem is I have awkward casing on my pc as they have not made it easy to open. There are screws on one side and there are pins on the other side. I would have to literally break open the pins and break the case to open the tower up.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I would go about opening the case? Or should I just take it to pc world? I do not want to do the latter as I have heard it can be quite expensive if I take it there. I am also not very good with this stuff so any help would be appreciated.
many thanks to anyone who can help.

If you could post pictures it would help. Also knowing what brand and model would be useful. On most towers you remove a couple of screws and the sides slide off.

  • Thx for the reply but I dont know how to scan pictures, and it's a tiny pc (the company) with I think an atx case if that helps.

you shouldn't need to scan anything, can you get digital photos from a camera or mobile phone onto an internet connected computer and post them?
  • i can only guess without seeing the case, but 2 common methods of opening a case are,
1.looking from the back undo the 2 screws on the right hand side, and slide the right hand panel towards the back
    2. undo screws on the right hand side, and 1 on the top, slide the top towards the back and lift off, then lift up the side

Take out the accessible screws, remove cables, the DVD Rom Drive/s will probably slide out of the front.

Does it actually have a model number on the front or back? ATX is a standard for the size of the motherboard (which obviously affects the case).

Can you see if it has separate side panels or is the type of case where the sides and top all slide off as one piece?

Generally it is a matter of removing screws and then it should slide back a bit so you can remove it.

Most of the cases ive had problems with have had screws in the front hidden behind the plastic facia

  • ok thanks everyone for giving the suggestions and I have finally opened it. However, I still don't know why the drives aren't working. All I know is that I put a cd in and they don't pick it up- I can only hear a fast spinning sound and it just keeps spinning the cd around.
Also, during the past two days my pc decides to restart itself for no reason, can anyone shed any light on this?

Sorry for the late reply and once again thanks for any suggestions and help.

Sounds like the PSU might be on its way out

But obvious things to check for are nasties first before looking at hardware ~

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

  • thx for the reply, but I already have a complete antivirus system on my pc, can I still run the program that you suggested without affecting the antivirus software?
