It's best not to speak to them at all on the phone.
Unless you get written confirmation there is no point in sending the money - part of it will be going in commission to the person on the phone who just tried to trick you. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -

That's a ridiculous position for them to hold. You should have asked if you could speak to a grown-up.

I have just been on the phone to AIC who are the DC for my outstanding massive Barclaycard debt of 18k. Since Barclaycard refused to freeze my interest when my income dropped significantly last year this debt has continued to rise to over 20k. AIC have offered me a full and final settlement offer of £6100, which of course which would be fantastic if I had a spare 6k! They then went on to say I could pay this over 3 months and I am considering asking my elderly parents to help me. I am concerned that after paying an instalment they may change their minds as they are very reluctant to put anything in writing. I write to them, they phone. They ring me, I write back. Never had anything other than a postcard from them. Don't trust them so reluctant to pay. The last time they rang they left a message with my daughter asking me to ring back and ask for Mr Faggot! What charming people. Has anyone got to this stage of an offer and paid by instalments? I'm continuing to pay £5pm at present but would love to get rid of this debt.0

It sounds like you do not have 6k of your own to play with so i would not recommend the f&f route to you at this time.
£5 per month for 300 years sounds fair to me.
If you want us to take a look at the whole picture, you'll need to do a statement of affairs using this calculator - format for mse and post it as a new thread.0 -
