??
Been with my present employer since feb 09 and before that was in employment from AUG 08. Was self employed Aug 07 - Aug 08 but advised HMRC of my change in status at the time I became employed.
so now I'm confused as to why my tax code has changed.
I'll call them today but does anyone have any input that could help me when I do call them?

There's a problem with 2010/2011 codes at the moment. A phone call will sort it out but best to wait until after 31st January so that the people late filing their tax returns can get through. There are very long queues on the taxes helpline at the moment

There are lots of instances at the mo with codes for the coming tax year due to the new computer system that was installed in the summer, please call HMRC and get us to sort it out for you, it will be corrected instantly.
If your code notice is for 10/11 tax year and you are able to wait to contact unitl mid Feb I would suggest you wait as HMRC have at least 250 calls in the queue at any one time due to the nearing self assessment deadline. These codes have NOT YET gone to employers / pension providers.0
