Completing job review forms in own time?

My boss put my job review forms on my desk today, and said I could only fill them in during works time if I had finished all my other tasks. My review is on Thursday afternoon....... I had hoped to get them filled in this afternoon, but as is the nature of my job, other things came up.

Is it acceptable to imply that an employee should complete review forms in their own time?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

What does your employment contract say about finishing work tasks?

Lots nowadays have words to the affect "From time to time your tasks will require you to finish them in hours outside the official time."

If it says so then do it in your own time.

In addition even if it doesn't the forms are for your own advantage.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

  • Depends how much of a scrap you want over it. If you do, then you ascertain - Do I need to get this done before the meeting?
    - If so, which of these other umpty-seven jobs I am doing would you like me not to do in order to make the time to do it.

If it was me, personally, I wouldn't. You can almost certainly find the time if you want to - and a job review is a process that I'd think you'd at least want to be involved in, just to make sure you get your say, and, hopefully having an active part in deciding where you go next.

Interesting question - I have just finished work after a 15 hour day, I am contracted for 37.5 hours a week and can do between 40-80 hours a week. It depends on how busy I am whether I have time during my 'normal working hours' for this type of thing; but generally it is in my own interest to complete them.

It depends on whether you view it as a job, or a career!

  • Given that these are job review forms, it's probably best not to wind up your boss prior to the review by arguing the toss on this  I'm assuming that these forms are only an occasional thing and won't take *that* long - so, regardless of what your rights might be, discretion may be the better part of valour here.

You mean - as in taking a long time for toilet breaks - ie sufficient to do them then?

So - I guess the question is "how long will these take to do?". Personally - if they could be "skated through" in 10 minutes flat - then I would just take a long toilet break and do them then (ie in work time). If they were going to take half a day - then I would develop a "stomach upset" or the like for a day's sick leave and do them then (ie in work time).

It depends totally on how long it will take to do this task how much work time you need to do it in - but I would certainly make sure (one way or the other;)) that it was done in "work time" - because it IS "work". Sometimes you have to "fight fire with fire" - only you will know whether its necessary in this case.

Thanks folks - got my review today. My co worker had his yesterday - took 3 hours!!! Think I might need to take some sweeties in to keep my energy levels up if mine goes on that long, and a lot of coffee.

BTW - I completed my form while my co-worker was having his review ;)

Conwy County Borough Council have recently run a job evaluation exercise which has, not unexpectedly, resulted in pay cuts for many of the lower paid admin staff and pay rises for the managers . I'm sure a lot of admin staff there wouldn't agree it was in their interests to complete their review forms.

p.s. If I worked for CCBC (I don't) I think I'd be cancelling my UNISON membership pretty sharpish.
