I am 5ft 10 and at your age was 8st 4lb which is theoretically seriously underweight. I could really stuff myself with whatever I liked and not gain so much as an ounce.

I managed to conceive two children within a month of trying each time still at that body weight.

Yes I had endless jibes about how thin I was but there really was little I could do about it. Post children I was around 9st and since then the weight has been creeping up and I can now longer eat whatever I like with no consequences.

    Everyone is different.

I do think these charts aren't always accurate as like tandraig I am 5ft 1 and a bit now and I weigh just over 8 and a half stone and i veer on the chart towards the obese end of normal and yet people are alway telling me i am thin etc and I am a size 10 sometimes an 8....My mum said my dad had heavy bones and she thinks this what I have...

They really need to be able to treat people as individuals....

Skinny doesn't mean you can't necessarily conceive but you need to know how your own body works and where your cut off limits lie.

that's true. but it's worth remembering that having a baby is not just about conception. the foetus will need to get all its nutrients from you while it is developing. weight can also effect hormone balance etc. so being underweight is can increase the change of miscarriage and not having a healthy pregnancy (as of course can being overweight).

    Hi laura,

Up until my first child, I was exactly the same as you, 5 ft 6 and 7 and half stone. Right the way through my teens. After I had my first baby though, I sat at 8 and half stone and that is now my normal pre pregnancy weight. I ate like a horse, in my later teens I drank like a fish (known to put weight on you) didnt do much exercise...it was just my metabolism. IN school I earned the nickname skeletor because I was so skinny. I went through a phase of eating 4 choc bars a day with my dinner money I was so desperate to be a 'normal' weight.

Even as an adult, it makes me mad to hear larger people say thin people shouldnt moan about their weight. Putting on weight is harder to do than lose it with a high metabolism.

I cant really suggest anything to help you put on weight, I tried. In the end, it was having a baby that helped do it for me. I dont think you are abnormal though, just of slight build.

  • Don't panic...like others on here I was very skinny as a young woman - 5'5" and less than 8 stone, but I conceived first month (twice) at that weight - always had regular periods.

Now I have an underactive thyroid and am heading towards 11 stone, but previously the most I had ever weighed was just over nine stone the day before I gave birth to my older daughter!

Both pregnancies and labours were straightforward and both babies good weights (7lb and 8lb).

If you're eating properly and are fit and well and your periods are OK when you come off the Pill to start trying, then honestly you shouldn't have a problem.

    Good luck!
