Inputting figures on Tax Return

Options
I`ve just started to input the info on my tax return, just wondering if someone can answer me a question. I was sent a short tax return (also did one of these last year by post) yet when I get the the expenses page it wants me to list everything when last year we lumped it all together. Is this just what happens on-line or have I not clicked something to be abe to do this?

Many thanks

PS I`m only half way thru so I`m sure I will need lots more help - its my first time!

It will ask you whether your SE income was below (or above?) a certain amount, around £15,000 or so. If you have brought in less than this, then all they want is total income, total expenses and total profit. It is when you bring in over a certain amount that everything needs to be listed invidually.

Thanks I thought the magic figure was under £30,000 which is what is on my short return. Silly me should have sent it off in October!

Wonder if you could possibly help with another question please: I have a frachise and pay a weekly franchise fee these total about £6500 but I am not sure which expenses bit to include this figure in! any ideas?
  • You are probably right about the £30,000: the figures from years back stick in ones mind and it does rise from time to time. I submitted my own return last October, and have forgotten what it said.

I don't know anything about franchises, I do hope that someone who does will come along soon.

I did my return online last week, and I'm sure there was a question asking me if I wanted to submit my expenses as one figure or break it down. There were still boxes showing for the different categories, but it accepted the single figure quite happily. Sorry, no idea about where to put franchise fees from me either!

Thank you both for replying, I must have missed that box as would prefer to add them all up and submit one figure. I`ll go back in tomorrow afternoon after work and have another dabble. I`m cross with myself for leaving it to the last minute.

When I went through my tax return I distinctly remember one box coming up (a yes/no type box like this one) first time through, but when I changed my mind and went back to change it, for the life of me I couldn't find it again (luckily it wasn't anything crucial). I did start to wonder if it might be something that only comes up the first time you go through the form, and once you've gone past it it doesn't give that option again, and I wonder if the option on whether to give a single figure for expenses might be the same - hopefully somone on the forum might know? Or if not, and you can't find it, perhaps someone at HMRC could help?

I`m going to go through it again slowly just in case I missed it and the box is there. My task for tomorrow is to have it all finished whether it be short or long version. Was a bit scary though when at the top it told me I had only done 1%.

Just rung Revenue and you can`t do a short tax return on -line!! so I am kicking myself for making my life harder when I could have sent the other one off in October.

Can anyone help me with car please - it started off at £18500 new and has been written down by £3000 for the past 3 years so now base figue I reckon is £9500 so do i do 20% of this which is £1800 then take 20% off that for personal use - so figure for tax return is £1520 car allowance. Many thanks your help is really appreciated.
