Would this be frowned upon?

Please don't think I'm trying to play the system here because I promise you I'm not.

The only reason I went back to work after having my babies was so we could afford to pay back our debts. I had to go back when my little one was 7 weeks old and I've hated it ever since, but needs must and all that. Now that we're going BR would it be frowned upon if I looked for a new job with less hours and more than likely less money? I work afternoon/evenings just now and it's a PITA! Tea times are messed up, the kids bath and bedtimes get messed up and we have to rely on family to be able to look after the girls which can mess up everyone elses plans too. I'm also doing an online course from home to lead to a better job and career and I never get any time to do it anymore since changing jobs.

I worked out how much we would need for everything and whilst I couldn't give up work altogether I could cut my hours right back to 10-16 a week.

If I did this after being granted BR would they think I was taking the Michael as any IPA would need recalculated as I'd be dropping anywhere between £100-£200 a month.

TIA

x

I thnk you have to consider what is best for your children, Have you checked if you can get tax credits? If you drop your hours or didnt work would be entitled to a different amount?

BR isnt easy, i HAD to have some time off and not work and you do and can manage. Not many treats were allowed, and shopping was basic items but we did manage for the year i took off.

If you change your job, be prepared to be asked why you have changed - although sometime they dont bother.

  • I chose to leave an extremely 'good' job just before going bankrupt. I was so stressed with both the work and the money worries that I would have very soon ended up being signed off sick. It was never questioned and within weeks I had a nice part time work that kept me ticking over and saved my sanity! Your children won't be little for long, if you eel you want to be with them more then go for it.

Cant see problem at all. You have sensible & valid reasons, childcare & study. If ever asked, which is unlikely, just say exactly what you said above.

    Good luck :-)

Thanks guys! I would be entitled to £10 a week more Tax Credits than what I receive now so nothing that would break the bank (pardon the pun). I was out of work for about 3 months just before I got this job and I loved being home with the kids and being able to go to DD's nursery and help out and have my littlest one come too. She is chronically shy (because she can't see properly she gets overwhelmed) but she loved playing with the older kids and it really brought her out of herself.

I know I shouldn't need "permission" to do what's right for the kidlets but again I don't want to be seen to be taking the mick. :)
  • Just do whats best for you, when my OH was pregnant last year, we took volountary redundancy and then went BR 2 months later, now she doesn't have to work until the baby is at school or we have another one. Its your choice basically, nobody can force you to work.

I worry about the same things too TD mum, but I agree - put the children and family first for once. If bankruptcy doesn't allow you a fresh start, then that's a real shame!

    Hi there,

It sounds very hard to balance out, but at times like BR you have to make sure familly are cared for the best as children can tell when bad things are happening. I personally do not think it would be unreasonable to reduce your hours. Its not as though you are doing it to make yourself BR or avoid an IPA.

OR should be ok if you explain.

Best of Luck. let us know how you are getting on.

If you can manage with the drop in income then I do not see a problem, far as I am concerned, family come s first...

  • Enjoy your children and don't worry about it. You have already sacrificed enough by being forced back into work so soon after having your little one just to cover debts. This is a new start for you and your family. As long as you can cover what needs to be covered then go for what makes you all happy.
