Tax Coding of D0

Options
I got a coding notice from HMRC stating that my tax code on the salary I received from my employer starting in April 2010 would be D0 and I'd be taxed at 40% on everything. Looking this up it stated that this code was normally used for secondary sources of income. Now, I'm begining to fret because I'm a lone parent who works 3 days a week and I can do without being taxed at 40%.

Anyway, I phone them up today and the woman on the end of the phone can give me no idea as to why my tax code has been changed to D0 and promptly changes it back to what it was before. I was wondering if anyone else could shed some light on why this might have happened? At first I thought it might be to do with the working tax credit I get but that's not taxable. Company was taken over in 2008 but we haven't changed name so I'm wondering if there's been a confusion there? I'm just worried because HMRC couldn't give me a reason as to why it had happened and that always makes me nervous.

Thank you.

There's been several threads on this Forum in the last couple of days from people with the same problem.

Appears to stem from start up problems with the new HMRC PAYE system ... as opposed to anything in your background. if they simply changed it ... suggests they know the D0 is wrong. But they're not good at publicly admitting system problems

Crikey. If I'd known I'd have offered my services as a professional software tester (15 years and counting). I could do with the extra cash and then they could have used their blooming D0 code!

No .......... they need some professional Code writers first! ;)

But their testing is also a bit remiss ....... so you may have been called upon later.

You wouldn't believe that this new system was supposed to have been tested in a model situation for 6 months before they launched it

Was that Lego ..... or Meccano? :p

I've seen their testing at close quarters in the past ..... and it's not been up to the rigorous workout such systems get in the live environment.
