Remortgaging: Best time to pay off old mortgage

Hi All,
I'm normally a resident of the Techie Boards, but paying a visit to you guys today :-)
I'm in the process of re-mortgaging and have been asked when I want the new mortgage to start / the old mortgage to stop. I currently pay my existing mortgage on the 1st of the month.
Is it too simplistic that I should be telling the new lender to re-pay the old mortgage on the 1st of the month or is there something else that I should be considering
Many thanks in advance
