I wanna buy a new single bed!

Hello all
I was wondering if anyone could help me out in my quest for a new single bed!
I don't mind spending a lot of money on a new bed as long as I'm getting my moneys worth. I've had a look through the forum and have come to the following conclusions.....
I would like a pocket sprung bed with a divan base with drawers
I want to be able to turn my bed
I would like a UK made and sourced bed
I want to be able to try it before buying it
I have to be able to buy it in NI
A couple of quesitons if anyone can help out...
1. Is latex any good and should I pay some more to get it?
2. I've found the Harrison range of beds locally to me and have been told that the beds are on a half price offer as they're a new range. One quote I've had is for the Pearl Divan at £665 which has 3500 springs in the matress and 1000 in the base. Can anyone provide any comment or feedback on the bed or the Harrison make, or can they provide any other recommendations of beds to get?
3. Is there an optimum number of springs that you should get in a bed? Is more always better or is there a point at which it doesn't matter as much?
An example is that Harrison have a bed which has 2500 springs in the matress and 1000 in the base and it is £565. It's £100 cheaper and has a different top to it and I'm wondeirng if I'll notice the difference in the number of springs.
Thanks!

Hi Rebby
Pocket springs - anything between 1000 and 1500 is ample - 2500 the springs will be very small and liable to get squashed and easily damaged or they are putting in 2 layers - another way of bumping up the spring count without giving you anymore for your money.
Latex and memory foam are great for extra support - latex isnt heat sensitive so if you are concerned that you will heat up, go for it, memory foam is heat sensitive and should feel slightly warmer. Generally latex and memory foam will be non-turn.
Springs in the base - id keep away, will wear out the mattress quicker more of a gimick.
Where abouts in NI are you located?0 -

Sprung bases aren't a gimmick. They give a softer more luxurious feel to the bed, and if anything can make the mattress last slightly longer.
You were fairly spot on as far as all the other things.
The trouble with being in NI is that it is difficult to find beds made by independent manufacturers.0 -
GreenTea and Tim, thanks for the info!
It's interesting to hear that more springs may not be better. I'll have to have a wee rethink on the bed I was thinking about and to look at a few more options.
I'm in the Bangor area of NI, but am happy to go for a drive to other towns to try out some beds!
Tim, I know what you mean about NI not having many sellers doing an independant range of beds. Recently I've noticed the trend to be for signs to be outside shops advertising the price of the bed and how it's a bargain, rather then any makes or any sort of quality being mentioned.
There is one local manufacturer called Starplan who make their own Vono beds, local people seem to rate them well so I will head to see their range.
A friend has suggested taking a trip to try a local place which sells Slumberland, Relyon, Sealy, Myers, Silentnight, Dorlux, Staples, Airsprung and Rest Assured beds. I remember reading in the forum that some of these companies had been taken over by bigger names, so they're not what they were a few years ago. But of course I may accidentally not try any Silentnight or Slumberland beds!
Thanks again for the help..... I may be back with some more questions when I try out a few more beds!0 -

Just so you know, Sealy, Rest Assured, Layezee, and the pocket sprung bed company are all part of the Silentnight group.0 -
I much prefer latex to sprung mattresses, they feel a bit different at first but seem to give much better support. Mine is a "layflex" http://www.flexmattress.co.uk/layflex.asp but there are lots of different types. Also I think sprung slats allow better ventilation for the mattress than a sprung base.0

What is better than latex only for support is pocket sprung with latex. However you want one with a 2" deep full layer.
Sprung divan bases do allow air through the base, it's platform top bases that are just solid board on top. Any type of slatted base aren't suitable for most pocket sprung mattresses.0 -

Have you visited Sound Asleep Beds in Bangor’s Main Street – it’s opposite H. Samuel and the Abbey? A friend of mine works there and their beds are sourced from independent UK manufacturers. I got a memory foam bed from them a few years back and its fantastic, but I know they also sell pocket springs with latex. As far as I know Starplan are more Bedroom furniture and do beds on the side, so they won’t have the same specialist knowledge or ranges of mattresses. Also the Main Street shop has a relocation sale on at the minute so you might pick up a bargain0 -
Hi weeorso
Thanks but I tried Dreams. They only tried to sell me Silentnight and Rest Assured beds and they recommended ones that were non turn and had memory foam on top. Also, their sale is (to me) a bit like a DFS sale where the prices are overinflated before being put in the sale. They offered me a 1400 pocket sprung with memory foam for £549 as a sale price! The same make and spec of bed is being sold in the Argos sale at £389 so I don't have much faith in the Dreams sale!
The search continues - hopefully the weekend will bring some new shops and options!0 -
Oh sorry weeroso, just realised that sounds asleep isn't the same as dreams!
Oops, will try there tomorrow then!0 -
Okay, I've still not bought a bed yet, much to amusement of all my friends and the people I work with!
I think I now sort of have it down to 3 beds....
a relyon braemar - it's pocket sprung, you can turn it and it's a divan.
a rest assured sanctuary - pocket sprung with a latex top, but you can't turn it. but it is veryyyyy comfy
a harrison bed, which has about 2500 springs
all the bases of these beds are pocket sprung.
has anyone tried any of these beds or can give any feedback on them?
(tim - i know rest assured are owned by silentnight, but the bed was really comfy!!)0
