Probably a very stupid coupon question

When you talk of the coupons which you redeem in supermarkets, are you referring to coupons you clip out of magazines and print off the internet? Do they not have to be for the product they are supposed to be for? ??? :D

Yes it's the coupons from magazines etc. Different stores seem to have different rules but Tesco & Asda do take them without buying the product. A lot depends of the check-out operator also. I'm sure some of the others on MSE are a lot more qualified than me so they'll no doubt post and keep you right.

Depends on the supermarket and to some extent the operator (the best are the dopey looking young lads).

Sainsbury's have a very strict policy, others (Tesco, Asda) are less so. In the past it was relatively easy to get a large number of coupons through the checkouts - I did £10 a week on about a £60 spend - but it does now appear that the policy is tightening up, possibly in response to the the large scale use of Internet coupons via the mailing from this site (which goes out to 100,000 people!).

Thanks for your quick replies! I shop in Tesco so I'm going to get a-clipping. ;)
  • I didn't know about Sainsbury's strict policy. I was away for the day last Monday and bought a few bits & pieces in Sainsburys. Handed over 5 x £1 vouchers (all the same - manufacturers and not internet) and he took them all. This was off a shop of £10.43 so I did really well.

There's a list of all the policies at the https://www.rpoints.com forum on coupons. These were as of a month or two ago though, and policies do change - there are usually some get out clauses too about local managers having discretion.

But the checkout operator is always the key factor. Even when Tescos had a lax policy, middle aged women seemed always to take it upon themselves to invent some bizarre set of rules for themselves.

    ASDA

    Thank you for your e-mail.

In response to your query we do except coupons whether you purchase the item that the coupon has been printed for or not.

However there are a couple of restrictions. If a coupon specifically states it is only valid at a specific store (which is not ASDA) we cannot accept the coupon. Coupons or vouchers from the ASDA magazine can only be used when the product is purchased. It is also up to the stores discretion how many coupons they except per shop.

On the subject of loyalty cards there are currently no plans for ASDA to introduce this type of marketing tool. The cost of running a loyalty card scheme would inevitably push up the prices of products we sell instore. Whilst we did trial a loyalty cards in some of our stores our customer focus groups showed us that customers prefer "Pounds in their pockets, not points on their cards"

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Kind Regards. Fiona Alcock ASDA Customer Relations

    TESCO

    Thank you for your e-mail.

In regard to your main query you do not need to purchase the product in order to use the coupon.

Unfortunately we do not accept any other competitors vouchers apart from there conditional spend ones ie - £50 get £5 off. You are totally correct that our magazine vouchers have to be redeemed against the actual product.

Kind Regards Samantha Bell Customer Service Manager

    SAINSBURY

    Thankyou for your e-mail.

In answer to your question relating to the redemption of coupons\ vouchers, they have to be redeemed against the relevant product stated.

However, when redeeming internet vouchers ,( STY ) it is one per transaction relating to the spend required stated on the voucher.

Hope this is of some help.

Kind regards, Susan Shaw Sainsbury's Customer Services

this still doesnt make it clear that you can redeem the coupon on goods you dont actually buy does it

I e mailed tesco and aske the following

would you please tell me if

A I must purchase the Item if the coupon is not from a tesco leaflet or
    book

B can I use downloaded from the Internet coupons

C can I use for instance, a farmfoods "spend £50 get £5 off " In tescos as ive
    been told

D will I be embarrassed again if I try to use coupons from the internet in
    Inverness Tescos again

    thank you

    to which they replied

On investigating this matter I was unable to locate any online coupons that
customers can download to use in store, there fore I would suggest that
coupons that are available online are purely for use on Tesco.com and not
    with in a Tesco store.

Should you have a money off coupon for a product, providing Tesco stocks
that product you can use the coupon with out buying that particular product,
however if you have 5 of the same product coupon and you would like to use
these all in the one shop you would have to buy 5 of the product that is
specified on the coupon in order to qualify.

Farmfodds coupons are not accepted in Tesco stores or on Tesco.com, the only
coupons that Tesco accept are Tesco coupons, sainsbury and safeways.

Should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact
    us.

so I would suggest you print that off and stand your ground when presenting coupons in tescos

I doubt if those scanned ones are going to work without a fight thoughj

nice to know we can use safeways and sainsbury ones in there though isnt it

Sorry For Such A BIG Reply But i thought it would clear up your first Question
