Making low fat spread more cheaply.

This is not my tip - infact it comes from a well know cheapskate book but I just noticed it and thought it may be useful for someone wanting to reduce their food bill further.
Buy ordinary margerine and to a 1lb amount beat in approx 1/3 cup of skim milk (it says use an electric mixer) and you double your quantity, it remains spreadable and still tastes the same. She says to add the milk slowly.
Less calories and double for your money - can't be bad!

Thrift lady, I suppose you could always try it with the supermarket own cheapest economy brand - I dont see why not, as with Anchor lite and other products I am sure this is all they do.

thriftlady, I have a vague recollection of a similar wartime recipe my Granny had written in the back of an old cookbook. it was intended to make the butter ration go further, so it might well be worth a try0

Yes, you can make your own "spreadable butter" (I have an aversion to certain margs because they are very unhealthy!)

TBH, I'd just rather use butter, but less of it - the stuff marg is made out of is just not nice; the trans fats that are created are much more dangerous than the mono-unsaturated fat in butter. If anyone does want spreadable butter that is just whipped butter with nothing else added, Kerrygold do it - need to make sure it's not left out to melt, though, otherwise it stops being spreadable.0
