It can depend on what time of year you buy your animal.
Last sept/oct, I bought a whole lamb which was butchered to my specifications and was a lovely local animal. It cost me the princely sum of £58 and some pence. I believe that autumn is the cheapest time of year for lambs as they are past their 'spring lamb' prices and have not yet gone up for the Christmas rush.
I haven't bought a whole or half side of beef yet. My butcher is cheap enough and I haven't asked him about bulk buying yet, although I'm sure he does.0 -
I bought a half a lamb at the beginning of March for just £23 - a whole lamb would have cost £40 but I wouldn't have had room for it.
It lasted ages and definately worked out much cheaper than buying piece by piece.
If you have the freezer space and a good local butcher, I'd say go for it! The quality is superior to Supermarket meat.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you are buying a whole animal or half an animal, don't forget to get the offal, remember you have paid for the whole animal not just the outside. In the case of a pig remember to get the sausages they make out of it as well. Butchers tend to " forget" you have paid for these bits as well.0

Wow £40 for a whole lamb, what a bargain, I,m surprised they make any money on that once to take rearing costs, vets fee's, transport, slaughter costs etc.
We pay just under £90 for a whole lamb uncut from the farmer, including all it's dangly bits - used to rear our own pigs and sheep 15 years ago, but F&M hit and it wasn't worth the cost and paperwork anymore.Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!
