Default on credit file by apex but no notification!!!

ARGGHHH the account was originally with MBNA and my outstanding balance was £953. My credit file in Nov 08 lists my account with MBNA as 'arrangement to pay', which is fine as i was with CCCS. I am no longer with CCCS and have spent the past year trying to negotiate F&F settlements with various creditors.
Now, MBNA sold the account to Apex and wrote to inform me of this. Apex wrote to say my account was with them as of 25 March 09. I have never recieved a default notice from Apex. however they list the default as being listed by them in Feb 09. I did receive a default notice from MBNA on 12th MArch which stated that if i do not pay the arrears then various things MAY happen etc...
i am confused by the dates, and who actually put the default on my file. AS far as i know mbna had my account up til 14th march when they sent me a closing statement and said a third party would be contacting me.
i am a bit annoyed as i am trying to sort everything out!!
do i send the default removal letter to apex or to mbna??
MBNA do not appear at all on my recent credit report, just apex. i have just paid them in full and final (i hope~) settlement.
