PLEASE HELP, I am looking to start a career as a self employed part time will writer, for a company in Durham. It sounds a good career to learn, but heard so many bad reports. the package i am thinking about is an investment of £2000 min where you get 40% commission. All questions i have asked have been answered to my liking, but still a bit apprehensive. Is it a good career move or am i being stitched up.

  • I do not know much about will writing, but this does seem a bit odd. Are you saying that although you have got a job, you need to give them £2,000?

  • I am working full time as a mechanic, but looking to change my career starting as a part time will writer and hope to do it full time in the future. The £2000 is a start up investment, which incudes training, marketing, indemnity insurance etc. sounds good?
  • i would say dont go for it.. times like these , one should save more , rtaher than invest

I would invest the £2000 directly into whatever study and qualifications you'd need rather than through the company. Then you'll have more control.
Will writing: a new career path for law graduates?

    17/11/2009

Law and LPC graduates could soon fast track to a career in will writing, thanks to a BTEC qualification created by the Fellowship of Professional Willwriters and Probate Practitioners (FPWPP) in conjunction with Edexcel. Those with appropriate qualifications and experience will be able to enter further up the qualification ladder and undergo less training.
Currently only solicitors and trust corporations can charge for probate work, but under the Legal Services Act 2007, from next year suitably qualified individuals will also be able to offer these services. The FPWPP is applying to become the regulator for probate activities and is working with the Legal Services Board to lobby the government to make will writing a regulated activity under the act. At the moment will writing is an unregulated profession, which means that anyone can offer will writing services without any formal qualifications or training.
Still in its early stages, the qualification route is being piloted by a young entrepreneur, Tom Murcell from Notgoingtouni.com, who is hoping to become the youngest will writer in the United Kingdom. Stick with LC.N for updates on the FPWPP's progress.

You could ask the above mentioned Fellowship your options for that course. It seems from their website the cost of the course is much lower and is awarded through Edexcel who are well-known I think ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edexcel ). But you may need prior law experience/training, if so perhaps they could advise you the best route. I feel it would be better than dishing out £2000 to a company and not knowing the legitimacy of whatever qualification they dish out.
