SLS free toothpaste

I'm trying to use more natural cleaning products and toiletries and am cutting down on SLS amongst other things. I know most brands of toothpaste have SLS in them and would like to switch to a non SLS brand.
My only concern is that with other toiletries I can tell if they aren't working but with toothpaste it is pretty important that I am using something as effective as the usual stuff.
Anyone know how the natural stuff compares, any dentists out there with an opinion?
Thanks x

Rough guide-
as long as the toothpaste has a high enough flouride level and isn't acidic then its ok to use.
Just look at what your typical toothpastefluoride level is and find something of similar levels.:money: Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to everyone who has helped.0 -
My sensodyne total care gel is sls free0

An easily available SLS free toothpaste is Sensodyne Pronamel.
The maximum fluoride level allowed in an over the counter toothpaste is 1450ppm. (You need a prescription for the really high flouride ones).
What GSK wanted to do with Pronamel, is to make an over-the-counter toothpaste where the fluoride in it was as effective as possible. So they took out anything which interferes with the way the fluoride can work on the tooth surface. One of those things was SLS. It also has less antibacterials in it.
As TND said above though, the really useful thing in toothpaste is Fluoride, so Pronamel is a very good toothpast for general use, and has no SLS in it.
The thing I've noticed with the 'natural' toothpastes I've seen is that they tend to throw out the baby with the bathwater, and get rid of the fluoride as well.
Look on the ingredients for something with > 1300ppm F- and it will be as good as anything.
(This is assuming your own dentist hasn't recommended anything specific for any problems you might have)How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

Waitrose own label "Total Care" toothpaste is both SLS and triclosan free. And it only costs 79pence a tube! A lot cheaper than sensodyne.
However, decreasing numbers of Waitrose branches are selling it. So make sure you ask at your local Waitrose to encourage them to start if they don't. Ocado (being Waitrose's delivery service also sell it).
It's not often this supermarket chain appears on this site!0
