Tuna in sunflower oil

Any ideas of what can be done with the sunflower oil drained off a can of tuna? I normally buy the brined one so this hasn't arisen before.

It seems a shame to just throw it away, and with the dogs and the cat watching my every move, I don't think I could bear the guilt if I just poured it down the sink.

(You don't think I'm taking this money saving thing just a smidgin too far, do you? :D)

if you are having mash with fish you can mix it with that,
However i can never understand why people buy tuna with brine anyway.

If I'm giving the tuna to the cats I mash the oil into it. It's very good for their coats. (I only give them one small tin of oily fish a week though, between two.) Why not mash it into some fishy cat food, if you want the tuna for yourself?

Just be careful of giving the furbabes too much human tuna as it can be bad for their kidneys... a small amount is fine though.

What's wrong with tuna in brine, Ljonski?

  • I would mash the oil into the tuna especially so if it has omega 3's in it. The oil should allow the flavour from oil based / soluble herbs to blend in it. Whether you need to heat it lightly or mix and cover in the fridge overnight I don't know. You'd need to experiment.

    or maybe this:

I normally buy the tuna in brine as i prefer the taste but on the occasion that i have bought the one in oil i usually pour a bit into the dogs dishes on top of their food and a tiny bit on the cat food. As long as its not often there shouldn`t be a problem, they all love it and its great for their coats.
