Council Tax arrears PLEASE HELP ME

again 2nd what CIS said - in my opinion, no need to attend court, the LO will be granted, it is ESSENTIAL that you contact the council the next day with offer of repayment as suggested before.
I know it is difficult to ask for help - but you are a parent now too, if you child was in this predicament in years to come, wouldn't you be upset if they DIDN'T ask for help?
Your mum and dad, might be able to clear both of your main concerns without it causing them hardship, you could then say to them that you will pay them back at £100 a month the debt would be gone in 2 years!
And this would be manageable, we are all human they will understand how difficult it is to manage, ASK for help, it will stop all the stress and get you back on an even keel, mum and dad will be easier to negotiate with than bailiffs - if they can't/won't help at least you will have asked!
And if you are brave enough to ask do not ask for £1000 ask for it ALL - but insisit on paying it all back. Even if they say no to you paying it back, put it away in a savings account and then when you have it all you can buy them a holiday etc!
This debt is important and it is causing you worries, speak to your folks, write them a letter if talking is difficult or.... show them this thread!
Good Luck - Thinking of you - Ask them ... do it today!!

If you are not working (as per your previous threads) then you should be claiming something. If you are on benefits then you shouldn't be paying council tax. If this amount is for a previous year then let them get their liability order (it's just a confirmation that you owe council tax it won't affect your credit rating) and let them take it from your benefits at £3.25 per week.
edit: I just realised it would take 10 years at £3.25 per week to pay £1,800....lol that's the way it is. they can't ask for more and they can't send bailiffs if that is what is agreed. never mind. how ever did you owe so much without a liability order already?:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

If you are on benefits then you shouldn't be paying council tax.
Not always the case - a lot of people do assume this and end up with a Court Summons but yoyr right that the OP may need to either submit a CTB claim or query any existing one.and let them take it from your benefits at £3.25 per week.
The flaw with that idea is that when we consider a case we dont have to issue an Attachment of Benefit, its one of the powers the council have but its not mandatory.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Can anyone help me
??
Today I received a summons for non payment of council tax. It started last year when I went back to being a student but my partner wasnt. I sent back DD form but accidently filled out one for the wrong account number (in my defence I didnt realise they changed the account number as we hadnt moved). The council never told me that they had received this DD but it was for the wrong account (this would have seemed logical unless they were too dim to realise).
To make matters worse (I only found this out this morning) they sent a reminder about non-payment in December which I never received (it wasnt the only thing around that time to be lost in the post). So they say today that we have to pay in full and pay the costs which are £55.
I've tried to explain this to them but they wont do anything to help and they wont wave the costs.
Can anyone offer any advice on what I can do? Are these costs even legal? they seem outrageously high for sending me a few letters. Can I pursue the Royal Mail over the non-delivery of the reminder?
Thank you so much to anyone who can help.0 -
Hi
Start by finding your local councillor and ask them to intercede. often works. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
