Advice needed re making hummus...

I was going to try making my own hummus today. I bought a tin of chickpeas last week ready for it. My recipe tells me to use 2 tablespoons of tahini (sesame paste) but when i have just looked it up on Tesco website it costs £1.89?..and it says to use within 1 week once opened? If this is so then surely it's cheaper to jusy buy ready made hummous?

I got my recipe from a frugal living website so i thought it would save me money to make it?

Thanks for any advice

  • I think the use by date is wrong I have had tahini before and the date was much longer than that. I don't seem able to make nice hoummous though. Good Luck.

Whenever I've made it, no matter how long I pulverise the chick peas for it is never as smooth as the stuff you can buy. Unless you're making for a crowd or you REALLY love it (and I do) I would suggest buying as it is cheaper. (I buy the low fat stuff too!)

i've had a jar of tahini in the fridge for months and its fine HM hummus is so much nicer than the ready made. I guess you could make your own tahini from sesame seeds...

I've kept tahini for months too. Another way I use it is on toast: you spread a little Marmite on first, followed by tahini, then topped with slices of tomato. Mmmmmm..........

My HM hummous is horrible though.:rotfl:

If you decide to not to bother, chick pea curry is really nice.

I read it as how to make humans too.
  • I really prefer home made hummus & keep tahini in the fridge for ages & ages - in fact I don't think I have ever looked for a sell by date  It's so quick too - a tin of chick peas, a spoon or so of tahini, garlic, lemon juice olive oil & some water all whizzed together & it's done. It takes longer to clean the processor than it does to make the hummus ! Have a go - it's worth it.

tahini can keep for ages and it's cheaper if you have a middle eastern shop nearby.

But if making low fat version, substitute with low fat yogurt

I looked and looked this morning in Tesco for Tahini and i couldn't find it, I also had two members of staff looking for it and they couldn't find any (incidently they didn't know what it was though).

Would someone kindly be able to post a recipe for hummous without the tahini?

    Thank you for your time
