Debt collectors threatning to get credit report

I hope I have posted in the right forum, if not apologies and could someone redirect me.
My boyfriend has had a letter from a debt compnay for a debt he hasnt sorted yet claiming that they will be applying for his credit file so as thy can make a choice as to which form of litigation to take including forcement of house sale. The debt is for £550 for a old credit card. We are going to come to an arrangement with them HOWEVER can they actually apply for his report? Isnt that covered under the data protection act?? I am quite prepared to argue this if they are being underhand
Many thanks in advance

I am not totally sure but it sounds like an unusual request from debt collectors. Hopefully someone can help you.

Not too sure what information they can get from a credit report if they aren't doing a credit check (which requires signed consent). Might be worth contacting Experian or Equifax to ask. They can do a search that will leave a "soft footprint" but not sure what data that will give them.
How old is the debt?
Is it possible that the debt is statute barred? After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91

I thought it was a strange request too, I had a look at that site and still cant see what they would get from it? And no the debt is not 6 years old....unfortunatley!!
I think i'll just write to them with a payment offer and just ignore this threat as that obviously is all that it is!0
