in Cutting tax
For approx 3 years we (OH and I) let a house and both did self-assessment.
On our last return (last year) we put down on it that the property was no longer let and we would not be filing a SA the following year (this year).
Today, 15 Jan, we have both received letters stating we need to do SA by 31 Jan or risk the penalty fine.
Do we need to file one?
How do we ensure that we won't get SA'd next year?
Thanks for any advice!

Yes, if you are required to self assess, then you have to. HMRC often issues SA's in the year following the cessation of lettings or a business just to check that the income has indeed ceased. No harm in writing to your tax office asking them to confirm that you will be removed from SA for 2009/10.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

I like the bit about getting confirmation of removal for next year.
