I have seen a pc for sale which claims to be 6 GHz.
After reading the description this is what it says.............
INTEL P4 775 6.0Ghz Power System
NEW 775Pin smithfield Core(2x3.0ghz) with 2x2mb(4MB) L2 cacheAlso 1gb ddr!
How much faster would this pc be compared to a 3.0 GHz pc?
Is it worth getting? Also, is this what they call a duo processor?
The link to the ebay listing is
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=019&item=290002585700&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
Before you ask, no this isn't my item for sale. I'm not trying to advertise it. I would just like to know what people think of it.
I do a lot of converting dvd's to divx and wonder if this would speed it up.
Cheers

It would appear that the processor that they are touting is a Dual Core processor.
This means that theres a single 3.0Ghz processor, but it has two processing cores, each of 3.0ghz.
This techincally doesn't make the machine 6.0Ghz.
You will only gain the benefit from using a dual core processor with specific DUAL CORE applications.
At the moment, most applications tailored to support dual-core processors tends to focus around the gaming and programming community.
Not necessarily your Word, Excel, etc and many other applications you'll use.
Similarily 64 bit processors, only really show benefit for 64 bit applications.
otherwise using a standard 32 bit application...will only run at 32 bit.
If you're going to buy a new PC, WAIT until the 29th July.
Theres a BIG planned shakeup by AMD (not Intel, bleh intel!) to SLASH some of their processor prices by up to and even over HALF.
(Basically they are cutting down on their range of supported processors, and are even dropping the new AM2 4000, 4400 X2 64bits!)
Of course, Intel will (in time) shortly react to this planned action - hopefully by cutting their prices too.

AMD wil most likely be slashing prices as the Conroe Dual core 2 will be out by end of July. I have heard reports that its a kick !!!!!! processor and beats most of AMD processors in most tests.
Of course if AMD lower prices that could start a price war and in turn Intel may follow.
I waiting to get my hands on a new system for well over a year (money is tight) but I may hold off a little longer to see how prices are.
I was impressed with the speed of a friends dual core 1.6 processor in his new lappy so hopefully the new processors will be even better.
I also do a lot of encoded for my own personnel reasons and plan to get back into gaming as my old machine just doenst cut it anymore particularly the graphics card.0 -
I very nearly forked out just over a grand on a new system with a nice shiny 4200 X2 AM2 64bit *drool*.
But...I got wind of the AMD news and I'm waiting a bit longer.
Although if you keep waiting and waiting in the computing industry then you'll never get anything!
Oh and of course, when you can afford anything in IT then its already obselete
My 3200xp (even with a good 1GB of 3-2-2-3 CAS RAM) and Radeon 9800 pro is feeling the strain of many games.....and also VS 2005 :-/
Soooo if you're after a new PC, maybe hang tight for a good month, hopefully Intel will cut prices and the general market will follow suit and take a bit of a price drop - although it may take a bit longer for it to prop to shops such as Pc World, etc.
-Note: Some places such as Aria have already started doing half priced AM2's o.O.

Thank you all for your advice.
Towards the end of July/Begining of August I'll probably post a question on herre as to the best pc to get once things have been reduced in price.

It slow with Visual Studio? Shouldn't be with that kind of spec. One of my machines at work is a 2.4Ghz Celeron and it gets by on that ok(ish). Guess it depends what you're doing. Runs clean as a whistle on my AMD64 3500+, 2gb Ram.
Only tricky part of prices drops, is guessing when it'll filter through to the retailers. Can sometimes take an additional 2-3 weeks, and you end up waiting nearly 2 months.
Unfortunately, Intel Core (P8 architecture) does look set the knock AMD's K8 architecture. It's very impressive from what I've read. Still if AMD's drop in price I may still stay with them having been so happy with my current setup.
It used to be all about performance for me, but nowadays heat and power consumption do have some bearing, of which AMD currently do very well. Maybe I'll upgrade to a 4200+ or 4400+ dual core depending on how the prices are."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Intel use (and always have used) a stepping system for their CPU prices, so when they roll out their new line in a bit, some seriously tasty hardware is gonna plummet in price
AMD have to counter it, so you fanboi's get your cheap amd chips too. A nice summer for upgrading coming up me thinks"If you really want to hurt your parents and you don't have nerve enough to be homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts."0 -
Eye and we may need the extra hardware when Vista comes0

I have a XP3200 too with 1gb in dual channel mode(but with slower timings) and many games like F.E.A.R. run well at decent settings.Perhaps you should upgrade your graphics card!? A 6800 would be a good upgrade - I have a modified 6800LE myself(unlocked to 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shaders). You can a 6800 for well under 100 quid.My card cost less than 100 quid from Ebay.0 -
I know what my system issue is, just over a year ago I installed the original beta (not beta 2) of VS2005....will all the bells...and the SQL server.
And it fell over...and over it went.
I spent weeks trying to fix it, get it removed...everything.
Eventually sorted it out, but my systems been laggy as hell ever since.
I've not had time to reinstall windows and all my system software (takes a good week or so to 'tweak' it all so its 'just right) as I was in the middle of my final year at Uni.......
Not a clever time to play with beta's.
So, never install a beta on your main machine, lesson learnt :-/

Many of the newer games need crazy amounts of GPU power.I realised that when my 9500pro couldn't keep up anymore
