George Osborne vows to cut public spending immediately

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8460548.stm

Not a fan of the Tories but at least they would face up to things

He told the audience: "Everyone knows the government's spending plans for next year are driven by a looming General Election and not economic reality.

Interesting that he said that freezing salaries in the state sector would be 2011 onwards

Only 'immediate' cuts are cutting advertising, tax credits over 50k and stopping child trust funds for the rich which presumably will in practice be quite small in the scale of things

I wonder if these announcements are to lure the benefit class into voting Tory? Sounds like the Tories have morphed into nuLabour (seeing the middle class as the cash cow)?

Wonder if the Tories will actually do anything to cut the profligacy of the welfare state or just continue with the status quo?

Otherwise they would have to inflict cuts.

The state sector has an April to March budgetry year.

There is a expression used by ex German chancellor Helmut Kohl.

"You don’t win elections by putting the instruments of torture on display".

The child tax fund thingmajig should be scrapped completely.
That and the 'free computers' each cost about £300m a year.
There must be another dozen similar things which are fairly painless cuts.

Find another £40bn of painful cuts and we are on our way !

Aren't they also vowing to cut management consultancy spend by half? I know a number of people working on central government projects to "improve voice of the customer" and other such nonsense.

The problem is that these consultants run rings around civil servants and politicians with their babble speak.
