3 tier cake question

i was told that if i was going to use pillars to stack
3 tiers of my cake (M&S) the bottom 2 tiers would need to
be fruit or it wouldn't hold the weight.

Anyone know if this is true as no one in my family likes fruitcake?

hi,my mum got my sister her wedding cakes from m&s
    bottom a fruitcake
the med and top cakes were sponge
she didnt want fruit but the lady in m&s told us no matter if she was stacking or just placing on top of each other the bottom one had to be fruit to hold the weight

myself im having a false bottom cake then fruit, sponge and choc
these u can also get from m&s

    hope this helps x
  • I went to a wedding a few months back where the cake was sponge.
As M&S said the sponge cake wont hold the weight, and so they had their bottom tier made out of a box, covered in icing (made by a professional supplier).
If you need all three tiers, then you could try a piece of card under the stands to spread the load. Most shops that sell professional cake making items usually can help with that. but you would probably need to try and disguise it with some sort of decoration (a ribbon around the edge maybe?)
  • I am pretty sure that you CAN stack three sponge on top of each other as long as u use "dowels" (??) i might just be making this up tho lol!!! It might be worth just going to a local cake decorating shop and asking......or find a cake making forum maybe....sure someone on here must be knowledgable on this subject tho!
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

  • Hi wolfehouse,

I got married in October last year and had a three tier Marks and Sparks cake (Romantic Pearl Cake). I bought the pillars and dowel rods to separate each layer and then had my florist jazz it up to tie in with the rest of the flowers and our colour scheme.

You don’t have to have a fruit layer but what they do say is that if you do want to have a fruit layer, it has to be the bottom tier as fruit cake is a lot heavier than sponge and there is a possibility that it would collapse/sink with the weight if the fruit layer was on top of a sponge layer.

The options with Marks and Spencer’s wedding cakes are either:

    All tiers being Fruit
    All tiers being Vanilla Sponge
    All tiers being chocolate
Assorted tiers: Set combination of large fruit cake, medium sponge cake and small chocolate cake.

I had the assorted tiers and bought an additional chocolate cutting bar which was cut up and put out with the rest of the cake in the evening – it was delicious!

Hope that helps and good luck for your special day when it arrives.
