Refridgerator Plugs

Has anyone heard of these?
I saw one on a tv program a couple of years back - the usual 'how to make your house greener' thing.
I'm not sure exactly what they do, but it's something to do with only passing electricity to the fridge when it needs it, which apparently is only infrequently.
Since getting my last electricity bill I've been going around the house looking for ways of saving energy - switching off lights, not leaving things on standby, changing to low energy bulbs, line drying, etc.
I've calculating I'm saving on average £3 per week. Now I need a refridgerator plug, but I can't find them anywhere, or anyone who's heard of them.
Can anyone help?
[I'm also looking for some green 'halogen' bulbs - see seperate thread!]

Google for a 'savaplug'
Or even Froogle it...0 -
This sounds very dubious to me, a bit scamish if ya kna wot I meen
from the website (www.windtrap.co.uk) :
"When the thermostat on the fridge goes below a certain temperature it turns on a motor to pump refridgerant around the appliance.
This motor runs unnecessarily on full power!!
The SavaPlug limits this surge to match the fridge's actual requirements thereby saving electricity.
You know you're saving electricity when the red light comes on."
I'd think it means if the red light is on - you have been had !!!
ever heard of the saying "if it seems too good to be true it probably is"
Can anyone vouch for it ?There are 10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary, and those who don't.0 -
I have just bought an A+ rated Bosch larder fridge. The operating manual says: WARNING! Never connect the appliance to electronic energy saver plugs (e.g. Ecoboy:SavaPlug) No reason is given, but it might be best to check with the manufacturer of your fridge before using one of these plugs. HTH.0

My electricity bills were horrendous and so I invested in a couple of these Savaplugs along with other power savings. I've been happy with them, they've not created any problems and I see the red light come on and off demonstrating power saving mode - I guess I'm trusting them to be saving energy.
The Savaplug website gives a long list of appliances that are not suitable for connecting to a Savaplug - http://www.savawatt.com/productdetails.asp?id=2. If in any doubt give the manufacturers a call, I found them very helpful.0 -
What a huge list of incompatible appliances!
I found a site that investigated an early version of these plugs and found that if the current to the compressors was reduced, the compressors had to draw current over a longer period to start up, eventually meaning the capacitor and compressor overheated and failed early. You know you're saving electricity when the red light comes on.
No, all that is demonstrating is that a red light is on.0 -

Surely if the fridge is running too cold inside then you turn the thermostat to correct this.
This seems a more logical and cheaper solution
Or is there some magic at work here0 -
There's something wrong with the logic?
Plug thinks "Ooh! I'm saving electricity! I know, I'll switch a light on to indicate this!"
:rotfl:
I know, I know - I'm being silly!
Alternatively, you could just keep your fridge full - put in empty boxes when you create space in0 -
A few years ago Bejam/Iceland sold these, they dont now tho so maybe they didnt sell or didnt work :cool:0
