Do Zopa telephone your employer?

My mum was looking at loans through Zopa, and was wondering if they telephone your employer for any details? She works in a department that wouldn't be particularly happy with a loan company calling, so any advice appreciated.

Sorry, can't help on this. I signed up with Zopa just after it started and within 30 mins I got a call from one of the founders thanking me and wishing me well with the company. I was utterly astounded.

However, experience of loans companies, from a consumer perspective, I doubt they would call. I hope people with experience of borrowing from Zopa can pop in and advise you.

/Edit Just had a quick look at the Zopa forums and not got a lot of info, I'm afraid. Here's a starter for 10 linky http://talk.zopa.com//index.php?showtopic=4607&hl=employer

I recall being called at work by them, and they advised me that they were calling to check that I work there.

That makes sense - they'll call to speak with YOU, not your employer, to check you are really there. Thanks for that, Hazzanet.

Seems a bit of a strange practice to be honest, especially in work situations where you are not allowed private telephone calls?

It's probably a very quick and accurate way to check an applicant is telling the truth, and Zopa won't know anything about companies' private call rules.

Would your mum be able to provide a direct extension number at all - at least the call would come straight to her. Sorry, don't know her work situation so I can only generalize.

Thanks, just not possible I'm afraid. Would have thought pay slips would have been enough evidence. Maybe need to find another route. Thanks!

Yup - my previous loan apps have been helped by payslips in the past. I'm not sure how loan companies verify that payslips are real, though!

I took out a loan last month with Halifax and they called me at home to go through my application. I just happened to have have a day off work on the Monday and wondered later why they didn't get concerned about me answering my home phone on a work day!?!?!

Sounds a very stupid practice. I work for a very large company but I don't have a desk phone, only a mobile. If they called our reception, they could verify I work there from the directory but can't transfer calls to me!

Reception should work. They didn't reach me at work but I had no trouble getting money lent to me. Just let them know via their contactus email address and they will tell you what they will need.

Declaration of interest: I both have loans via Zopa and offers to lend there. It's currently unlikely that any of my offers will be accepted.
