Barclaycard Accepted but 1 week later they closed my account?

in Credit cards
Hmmm. I'd been posting in the Balance Transfer sticky (and had been receiving great advice from Moggles) - but here's a weird one ...
One week ago I applied for a Barclaycard Simplicity and the online decision came back: "need more information". This didn't surprise me as I'm self-employed and have some late (though not missed) payments on other CCs that I figured had tarnished my credit rating.
So I was surprised when, a few days ago, I received a Barclaycard in the post with a welcome letter (they never called me for more information as they said they would). I was a bit disappointed by the low credit limit (£1500) but, as Moggles pointed out, this was better than nothing. I had not yet got round to activating the card - but there was another surprise in today's post with a letter from Barclaycard informing me that 'as a result of our investigation and in accordance with Condition 09 (or condition 10 for some cards), we now consider you to no longer meet our current lending criteria and your Barclaycard has now been closed.'
They then invite me to phone them should I wish to discuss. Should I???
Will this have damaged my credit rating? I checked my report but there is no way that everything is on there (I've seen some threads that suggest my middle name having been omitted on some of my CCs could mean I have two credit reports).
I'd been planning to apply for a NatWest card but I think I'd better hang fire. Maybe I should just accept that I've messed things up a bit and spend the next six months building up my credit rating on my existing cards? I would however dearly love to not be paying such high interest.
Any advice very gratefully received. This has really taken the wind out of my sails.
