Hi, I crew quite a few festivals and can agree with much that has been said, but would like to add:

    - tins are heavy. Be choosy or you might regret it! Personally i only take tinned tuna or maybe a sainsburys chicken curry. IOW is a bit of a walk to camping. (Glastonbury can be a 3 mile walk, so over the years i've 'tatted' many cans of food and tins of beer, frying pans, and of course tents, that the punters couldnt be bothered to take away with them!:D)

    - Home Bargains often has those FOIL PACKETS of things - chicken curry is very good. Easy to pack, much lighter to carry, quick to heat. Sainsburys do small versions designed for lunches - if IOW has a bakery that could be lunch sorted. Most festies do have bakery stalls now, so check the vendors list on their website.

    - CARTONS OF CUSTARD are practically essential: can be eaten hot or cold, both as late night muchy food and hungover-can't-manage-anything-just-need-sugar food!

    - COUS-COUS instead of pasta - add some herbs, put on the right amount of boiling water, cover with clingfilm and 10min later it's done, hot, and used significantly less gass than pasta or rice.

    - hot chocolate (plus rum!), malt loaf, flapjack and dolly mixutres are for me essential as they keep up moral on the nth day of rain, and sweet treats are amongst the most costly things to buy at festies.

    Good luck, and have FUN!

I am veggie so perhaps I'm biased, but this is truly awesome:
    http://www.veggiestuff.com/acatalog/textured_soya_protein_chunks_savoury.html

It works like stewing steak (my carnivorous boyfriend says "it's like meat with all the fat and gristle taken out)... but it's dirt cheap and doesn't weigh a thing for transporting to your tent and back.

It's dried, so you just need to pop it in hot water or mix into a stew to rehydrate... and it quadruples in size, so one bag would easily feed you all weekend

I'm veggie too, but can't stand that stuff - they are just too bouncy to chew! Horrid texture. The mince is fine though.

  • Thanks everyone for all your suggestions! I know I will be the only one cooking!! The three men won't want to and I don't think I would want to live of beer and beer! LOL! They would be quite happy eating whatever they could get their hands on, but I don't think I could stand 5 days of rubbish 3 times a day! We are lucky enough to be staying in a bellpod!! The carpark is pretty near so can always leave some the car and only take what we need for that day.

For those who have been to festivals before, how do you find the security? Is it ok to leave food in tent? Sorry if thats a silly question :)

they are absolute crap but i have a guilty love of tinned burgers and campbells meatballs.. the meatball i eat cold from the tin ... hee heee

on a more healthy note if you get quick cook pasta you could easily make tuna sweetcorn pasta

on the security issue i would say most people dont get stuff nicked from their tents, as 99.9% of people are law abiding and there for the same reasons as you.

but there is always the chance that you might get stuff stolen if you are the unfortunate target of the scum minority as tents arent secure. dont leave valuables in there... they could just as easily steal from your car or pick your pockets if they are determined...
  • Brekkie idea, warm tortilla wraps in a fry pan, spread with choc spread and sliced banana. We go camping a lot and it makes a really filling easy brekkie.
