I agree with the above comments; I think the benefit of a trainee stylist is that they really concentrate on what they're doing, whereas a pro stylist can get a bit blase, 'I've done this cut a thousand times' sort of thing. The amount of times I've left a pro stylist salon with my hair looking like it's been hacked as apposed to cut is ridiculous! I'll always try and go to trainees from now on, even if my most recent restyle did take 6 hours
Never argue with an idiot; they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
  • I had my hair cut and coloured for £20 at the local training college last week, and it's the best cut I've ever had :) Cos they're training they get checked at every stage and take much more care than a lot of salons I've been to
    :j £2 coins = £2.00 :j

when i went to birmingham i had my hair styled for free by the charles worthington london team and i asked the lady was it worth getting your hair cut and paying a bit more for it, obviously she said yes but what she suggested for me was pretty good.

I think its one of those things youve gotta just bite the bullet and see if it is worth it for you, everyones hair, taste ect is different so what might be rubbish for one could be good for another.
  • I've had all cuts from Supercuts walk in salon to very expensive cuts. I was always led to believe a cheap cut was exactly that, and that was due to experience (I had a trainee ruin my hair style by not cutting properly, and she was already qualified, but training for the next level up). I have now found a hairdressers that is a 5 minute walk from my house. They're fairly cheap in all fairness at £20 for a wash, cut and a blowdry and a really good natter! I only need to go 4 times a year and that's because I need my roots doing! The girl who does my hair is 19 years old and has not long since finished college and yet after 4 visits I won't go anywhere else.

Wow that's handy. I wish I could find somewhere more local. I live in North London and I try to avoid going into Central London whenever I can, but all the decent academies are there. The things you'll do to save a few pounds eh :D

  • Funily enough my hairdresser recenty returned from Austrailia, and was so well spoken of I tried her and she is great (I have curly hair prone to frizz and she is great with it). .

I don't suppose she's called Jill? (that would be too much of a coincidence!)

It sounds like most people would vote for seeing a trainee under supervision then - it's not something I'd thought about before but I guess it does make sense that they will be more concerned about providing a good cut than someone who is going through 50 customers a week.........

Has anyone used a college or training academy anywhere in Berkshire/Surrey they'd recommend?

LOL, no. We're also a fair distance from Berkshire/Surrey, but she does have people come from Reading (and even Europe) because she ''gets'' their hair. She's quite bossy, and she tells ME what we are doing to my hair....having understood that long is mandatory. Luckily, what she wants to do is what I want to. She was also enthusiastic when I said I wanted to have a try of a darker colour (I've been ''blonde or blondish'' since early twenties) and I'm hoping she's going to be similarly enthusiastic about my next exploation of colour in a fortnight! However, I trust her, and if she says no it will be with a reason, and some other options.

I had a trainee, under supervision, ruin my fringe. She cut it at an odd angle, said her fingers must have slipped and they had to cut it really short to even it out. I looked terrible for weeks.

I am also in North London and if anyone has a really good hairdresser that can deal with thick wavy/frizzy hair please post details or PM me.

    Thanks

I can give a dearer recomendation if that helps, but its about 5 years since I was there...if you go past have a look. Its a really great Japenese guy in Hampstead, up the hill from the tube station going towards white stone pond on the right, who did my frizzy/curly hair well twice. :) Did a MUCH better job than the other hairdressers in Hampstead and was cheaper than some of them.

By chance I am going to Hampstead on Saturday so will wander up the hill and have a look at hairdressers en route. Thanks
