How tight is your budget?
i am now unemployed so budget is tight. with the wireless router i also need to get wireless adaptor/cards for the pc's as well. i assume cable variant router is cheaper and since both pc's has network cards as well as usb connection this would be the best route. also better security with the cable variant. heard that if you don't set your wireless router properly your neighbour can use your broadband.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problemsWell at least i learn something on the way

The wireless ones can be used wired as well, so you could buy one and move to wireless later when funds allow. The wireless function can be turned off if you are worried about security, or encrypted which makes it secure.
But the safecom from ebuyer is really cheap if you are happy with wired. Haven't used one myself, but have heard good reports about their equipment.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
thanks for the replies
at present my PC is connected to NTL broadband via USB cable. i have decided to use a router. Both pc's have network card installed. current pc is running win xp home while the old pc is running wins98
could you answer the following :-
1. do i have to load the NTL software disc on the old pc?
2. current PC - when i loaded the NTL disc i opted for the USB connection. I am lead to believe that for the router you have to use the ethernet connection. do i have to reload the NTL software to tell it i want to connect via ethernet connection
3. is there an idiot's guide to configuring/choosing routers?
any other advice would be greatly appreciated

There's usually not much configuration to do unless you go wireless. Plug in and go.
If you go wireless, buy it and come back with the model, as advice will vary - see wireless sticky thread.
As for choosing, they all do the same thing. Common brands are Netgear, Belkin, Linksys, 3Com etc.. Make sure you get a dsl/cable model, not adsl.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
