Cheap quality lock - won't get refund

Hi this relates to my other thread in a way because I'm dealing with the same establishment and same manager who seems to have a grudge against the world.

I bought a padlock for £5 from the gym, which is a really rubbish 3 digit combination lock, that the gym has (it has it's own branding gym branding on it, lol).

Annnyway.

I forgot my combination, I had all my clothes in my locker, and only a towel around my waist (thank god for that, imagine being naked and locked out of my belongings).

Now I'm no code breaker or locker picker.

But after panicking for over 5-10 mins, I managed to calm myself and learn how to crack the lock.

All I did was tug on the shank, and scroll through the digits and naturally when I hit the correct number the shank would become a little bit loose. Did the same for the other two numbers.

And voila.

Open sesame.

So I'm really chuffed with myself for doing this, and a bit p***ed off because I spend £5 on a crap lock.

So I retruend it to the manager to get a refund, the manager took it in and said "well we'll have to send it off to the manufacturer and see what they say", if they agree that the lock is "faulty" then we'll give you your money back.

Here's the thing/.

The lock isn't technically "faulty", it's just really low quality.
The manufacturer isn't going to say it's faulty, because this isn't just an individual one-off case, this relates to the design of the lock, and oif they agree that the lock is faulty, then it will apply to all the other locks, and they'll have to do a major recall.

Secondly.. doesn't the sale of goods act allow me to return goods with no questions asked within a few days of purchasing??

I'm really fed up with the establishedment.

Worst case scenaario, I'll start a revolution and go round approaching people who've boought these padlocks and cracking it within 20 seconds right before their eyes.

That should at least !!!! off the management, when an influx of people go to the counter asking for their money back//

But that's the worst case scenario, right now I just want my money back... even if it's £5

    No.
You are thinking of the distance selling reulations

All cheap combination padlocks that I have ever seen are like that.
You got what you paid for.
  • Cheap and quality dont go hand in hand

If you want quality you have to pay for it, if you want cheap you get a inferior product as you found out

I have to agree with the above, and as my supplier told me when I was buying some for my allotment....... "Locks only keep honest people out"

get yourself to a local locksmiths and buy yourself a decent padlock. £5 won't get you a decent one.

oh, and don't take any valuables to the gym - locker or no locker.

Have to agree, every combination lock I have had can be opened with the proccess you describe.
Buy a good small lock with a key, although you then have a problem with what to do with the key so buy one of those little water proof cases that hang round your neck.

How do you think 90% of the population open their suitcases when they get to Spain and can't remember the combination they last used a year ago !!

Maybe you should just look at it like you actually saved money and embarrassment. Had the lock you bought been of a better standard you would have had to pay a lot more to get it broken into/cut (as well as potentially having to venture outdoors in nothing but a towel.)

When I was doing my RAF Basic training at Swinderby in 84,the instructors charged you 50p to cut the lock off your locker. It went into the fund for the passing out day lash in the NAAFI!
We now charge our cadet's £1 & that goes to H4H.
