Query on Defaults

Wondered if anyone could help. I have a really odd situation. Have previously struggled with debt and just getting head above water. Funny thing is I have owed a bank a lot of money and in over 2 years they have NEVER chased me for it, I have moved but they know of my new address. Now default notices were put on 30 months ago.
I understand that defaults can only be registered for 6 years, does this mean that in 4 years these defaults will magically disappear even if I do not pay the debt?
Any thoughts.
