Best supermarket fish
Can anyone please tell me which supermarket does the best quality fresh fish please. I usually forgo the supermarkets in favour of individual shops. Butchers for meat, greengrocer for veg (and grow my own) etc and, as a new fishmongers had opened, i used that. However my experience with them was not one that made me feel like returning so i wonder if anyone can tell me their experiences please. We eat lot's of salmon but it's cod and haddock loins i'm after as we do home made fish and chips a fair bit.
Any info appreciated please
Thanks, RD.

I personally prefer Morrisons for fish - always very fresh. Their Salmon is excellent.0

I guess you have a different local Morrisons to us, the fish counter at ours smells in a really unpleasant way, I refuse to buy fish there! We do have another Morrisons a few miles further away and it isn't quite so bad though.
Tesco is the least smelly of the supermarkets we have nearby with Sainsbury a close second.0 -
Waitrose does excellent fish!:beer:In My 'Permanant' Pre-Masters Gap Year

Without hesitation, Morrisons. It pains me to recommend them because the customer service in our local branch is shockingly bad, and the quality of much of the rest of their produce (particularly fresh meat) is shoddy in my opinion. They also over-package far too much fresh veg.
But their fresh fish really is good, and has won awards.
Failing that, Waitrose, although they're significantly more expensive."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0 -
For me it would be Sainsburys as i have been to them numerous times saying i need xx for a recipe is there anything else i can use or i see you only have xx with the skin on can you remove it and it has never been a problem, whereas in Morrisons i asked for undyed, skinless and boneless haddock and got the reply oh we only have what you see, asked if they could remove skin and bones and was told not in this store - i was under the impression the staff were trained in these practices?:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

I think it depends on the supermarket - it's best to go and have a look (and smell!) round. Sainsbury's can be great, as can Waitrose but it is expensive. I live near two branches of Asda and there's no way I'd buy fish from the smaller one as the counter stinks, but the larger one is fine and I've never had a problem with the fish from there.0

It just shows how supermarkets vary from branch to branch. Our local Sainsbury's is dreadful for fish. But would recommend Waitrose & M&S.0

I love Waitrose for meat, don't buy much fish, but their fresh stuff is great in general.
Sainburys done really well in a newspaper fish survey before xmas.0
