Can anyone help with this please?
I use Paypal for ebay purchases.
Last monthe, I bought two items, one for £4.00 and one for £5.00, both within 24 hours of each other (although the timing isn't relevant)
I paid by Paypal as I always do. I had about £1 odd in my Paypal account with my Natwest savings account as my backup bank account (which I knew had literally £1 or so in it at the time) and my credit card as 2nd back up on their system.
both items were paid for and received.
When I got my Natwest statement, it said I was £74 overdrawn. I was shocked - this account can't go overdrawn, it's only a savings account.
It showed two Paypal 'direct debits', one each for the two transactions. It showed them as returned DDs at a cost of £38 per returned DD!!!
Now, the Paypal system , in the second or so it takes to authorise would have checked my paypal account, taken the balance, gone to my natwest account, taken the £1 odd I had in it, then gone to my CC (the two items were on my CC statement)
I phoned the Natwest and said the payment requests weren't DD's , they were the same as if I'd presented my card in a shop and it had been rejected due to insufficient funds. The CS girl said not so. She said it had been presented as a DD I'd set up, there were insufficient funds and (in the second or so it atkes for Paypal to do the request) been returned by Natwest.
So, I now have the items I've bought, paid for on my CC, but over £70 in bank charges the Natwest say aren't their error.
What can I do? She said contact Paypal , but Ican't see they would want to know.
Is the only other route to claim back the bank charges officially from the Natwest??
Ijust feel it was something that wasn't my fault - I'm sure I've had items paid for with Paypal from mysecond money source before and not been charged by my bank???

Hey is this the first time you have bought something usin paypal? I have my bank account set up on Paypal but it comes through as card transaction. When you actually pay for the items on paypal does it say it is taking it from your account or you card? If your account then you have set it up as direct debit, and yes you can only claim back from Natwest!0

They are still punitive "penalty fees" which are unenforcable in court
Check out the cag site for templates and info and get claiming0 -
my paypal is set up as a ddebit in my account.
i think, as Kevicho rightly said, it's a matter of claiming it back as unfair charges. i would visit the cag website immediately.
hope you get it sorted soon.MFW Newbie - #17. (#116 in 2019)

Good luck with getting the charges back!
If you've made payments this way without problems before then definitely get in touch with paypal (as well as the bank), perhaps they've changed something or made an error
