Benefits During Separation

Sorry it is long winded!
We have been married for 13 year and have two lovely boys, 4 & 7. Unfortunately our relationship is breaking down and we are looking at separating. Our house is worth circa £200,000 with and outstanding balance on a joint mortgage of £60,000. In a bid to maintain some stability for our boys, by not uprooting them, we are keen to keep this place if at all possible. I would move out and try to buy a 2 bed place so the boys could stay over and my wife would take on the mortgage.
The financial problems that we face are that I only earn £26,000 per year and my wife does not go out to work as one of our boys is unwell and my wife receives DLA and Careers allowance in lieu of this. We are going to contact our current mortgage provider to see if they are open to letting my wife take over the mortgage based only on her benefits but before we do this we need to find out what benefits we/she is entitled to and if possible the value. Currently we get, DLA £197.40, Careers Allowance £53.10,Tax Credits £110.00, Child Benefit £132.80, just less than £500 per month. Are there other benefits we could claim? We currently pay £131.00 Council Tax and I think that she should get at least a reduction on this, is this correct? I will obviously make maintenance payments in addition to these benefits.
One last question, do I need to inform the Tax office about a separation, does it affect my tax allowance? If so will I be better or worse off?
