Becoming a plumber?

Hi everyone -
Just kinda throwing this into the air...
Is there anyone on this board who is a plumber or is training to be a plumber? Can you advise on the best routes into the industry? I have looked at the various ways of training and would obviously like to do the training as quickly as possible as I am in my 30's. I might point out that I am also a woman!
I have looked at nightclasses in local H.E. colleges but this would take too long - years and years - I have also just called up a company called Aspire Training Solutions who said that they would need to book an appointment for an advisor to come around to my house. The person on the other end of the phone had no idea how much the courses cost but said vaguely that I should budget between £15 to £30 a week...what on earth does that mean?!!
It's so hard to find a career this day. I also can't help it that I like DIY and am a woman!!

ANY advice greatly appreciated!
Annie

Some companies will train you on the job on the basis that you stay with them for at least X months/ years after qualifying.
Being a woman will undoubtably help you get onto the over subscribed courses given colleges/ companies are generally desperate to hit quotas etcAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

The only issue I would have is that now that the shortage of plumbers etc etc has been publicised, a lot of people joined the training schemes, that means in 1-2 yrs there are going to be a lot more plumbers out there, will there be the work for them ?.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

A friend of mine is training to be a plumber and is also a woman. She works for a local housing authority 4 days a week and goes to college once a week. She gets paid to work but is obviously not as much as a qualified plumber. Here is a link to what my friend does (though it is a bit out of date)
