eBay! I had an 80s birthday party a few years ago and wore a purple lurex dress with silver thread running through (£5, Primark), silver legwarmers (£1, Pound Shop) and a silver lurex cropped jacket with wicked shoulder pads (£7, eBay). I curled then frizzed my hair for than authentic 80s perm and wore stacks of plastic bangles.

My friend came as early 80s Madonna - she splash bleached a denim jacket and torn off the sleeves, wore a black puffball dress with fishnet gloves, loads of pearls and rosary beads, ripped black tights and massive DM style lace up boots.

    Hope that helps! :)
  • Actually I think a look in topshop and new look is probably all you need at the minute - 80s fashions seem to be back. I stood behind a couple of teenage girls in a queue on Sunday and they were totally dressed as Madonna from Desperately seeking Susan. Which is a great look by the way, this is the one I'd go for personally.

Don't forget lurid oranges, greens etc were a hit then too..

I used to go out a lot in the 80's and you really need to go for big, frizzy, permed hair if you can. We used to wear puffball skirts too and these are out in the shops at the moment luckily! Lots of colourful legwarmers and coloured tights (think Fame!). I remember wearing a headband around my forehead and white, lacy, fingerless gloves too.

The first skirt is the right sort of shape.

We also used to wear dresses with a drop waist (the waist of the garment would be around the hips). If you can first imagine a dress that has no shape and is straight and knee length, then you put a band around about 3-4" from the knee and then raise this band with the dress so that the band sits just below the bum, making the dress shorter and sort of hang over this low waist. Don't know if Ive explained this well! The first yellow dress here shows sort of what I mean, except that the gold band of the dress would cling to the body and the top part of the dress would hang over this:

Also, big shoulder pads, bat wing tops or dresses and lots of colour. Lots of colourful makeup too.

Found this website with a few ideas:

I also used to wear a grey/silver jumpsuit which was quite clingy (I was skinny in the 80's!) and had a zip that did up from the naval to the top! Sheena Easton wears a blue one in this video:

    These are very 80's:

This will give you a laugh and an idea of how to "dance" 80's style!

  • Love the 80s dancing clip :)

Don't forget the other thing that was really in (the drop waisted thing reminded me of it!) was very backcombed and messy hair with a hairband around it - again I would refer you to Desperately Seeking Susan (I do still love that film :))

Oh Claire's Accessories are very 80s at the moment so it's worth a look for the added extras.

Leg warmers were big, if I recall, leggings and puff skirts, big blazers too. Leotards, basically what teenagers are wearing now, tbh! I had a lot of crimped hair!

Thanks everyone for their suggestions ..... Unfortunately we don't have many women's clothes shops where I live (unless I go to the mainland but I'm running out of time). I like the look of the outfit in the link below - basically a ra-ra dress. I have a black vest top which I could use but I can't find anything even near a rara skirts in the shops we have here - anyone know how to make one?

  • Hello! This is my first post on the forum, so be gentle!

I'm going up to Leeds next weekend for my brothers birthday and he has informed me that it is sports fancy dress. I am now struggling to find a suitable outfit! I want to think outside the box, but cannot find any companies that have the ideas I am after, such as a tenpin outfit.

I would appreciate any comments, or companies the MSE forum users know of!

    Thanks,

    Tom
