scrap metal?

i work in a timber yard, and we get bundles in with big heavy duty metal bands holding the bundles together. we just cut them and put them in a skip. and a scrap metal company picks it up from us when the skip is full. what i want to know is does anyone know the value of this metal? its about 2.5 inches wide and about 2.5 metres long and quite heavy. if i were to collect this stuff, could i make a bit of cash from this? im not sure if its steel or aluminium.
also im not stealing as its getting skipped anyway

I think it more likely to be steel, aluminium is a lot more expensive.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

would it be worthwhile collecting this metal? i would be happy with £20 or £30 here and there. also would i need alot to get this kind of cash?0

I think it would actually be STEAL and not steel or aluminium0

its not theft m8. my boss only gets a free skip to get rid of the metal. he doesnt get any money for it. when the skip is full he phones the scrap metal place to come and pick up the skip and drop off a empty one. so im not stealing anything from my company. especially if he said its ok to help myself.0

From what I have read on other posts (IIRC) steel is around £70-£80 per tonne, how much is it going to cost you to get a tonne of steel to the scrappies??Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

He doesn't pay for the skip because the scrappies make their money from its contents. Just double check that your boss does agree to let you have it and make sure he doesn't have an agreement with the scrap metal dealer as they may end up charging for the skip if they can't make enough money from whats in it.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
the skip will always be full when they pick it up. sometimes we have to put alot of scrap beside the skip untill the empty one arrives. also they only come when the boss phones them to tell them its full. could my citroen xarra picasso not take half a tonne in the boot?0

Yeah if you want no suspension left lol. The only way to make money from scrap metal is in bulk or if you live next door to the scrappie.
If you can get aluminum you'd be laughing as that £500-£700 per tonne, but again the cost of transporting it would be the main factor.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
lol ok m8. cheers for your time m8. i think it will prob be more hassell than its worth. i didnt think of the transporting it part.0

LOL it looks tempting I have to admit, we get through a lot of cans in the workplace and I did think of sending a van full to the scrappies but by the time you take out the cost of getting it there and crushing them its not really worth it.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0
