SA Help needed, PAYE from April to Oct, no P60, firm gone bust.

Hi people, I'm getting into a right state over this tax return, (my first one). There's no way I'm going to leave it this late next year.

Anyway, I was employed by a company, paying tax through PAYE from April to October 08, when I went self employed. I never received a P60 from the firm and to be honest I never really thought about saving wageslips, although in the last 6-8 weeks never got any of those either and as I wasn't getting paid on time (sometimes 4 weeks late), I was just happy to get money and was pre-occupied with looking for other work and how to set up on my own.

A few weeks later the firm went bust. The old phone number doesn't work and the director that I have spoken to doesn't want to know. Chances are they haven't paid any tax for the whole year.

I have copies of all the invoices that I've sent out since I started, some under CIS where the company paying me stops 20% tax, and some where I've just been paid gross. I've got all my receipts, expenses etc, but I'm left with a hole from April to October, whats the best thing to do?

Phone the HMRC? Will I definately be investigated if I ring them and mention I've 7 months missing on my records?

Will I have to pay the tax that was stopped but not paid by the company?

Any help will be much appreciated.

You're only given a P60 by and employer if you're employed on the 5th April, i.e. the last day of the tax year. However the employer is required to submit to HMRC a P14, which is essentially the same form, for all employees including leavers during the year.

If you leave during the year you should be given a P45. The top copy (Part 1) of the P45 should be detached and submitted to HMRC by the employer.

Either way HMRC should have a record of your earnings from employment. The obvious complication here is that your former employee went bust. If they were playing by the rules then they may have submitted Part 1 of your P45 to HMRC before doing bust so HMRC may have these details.
