If they were not in a fridge in the shop you bought them from, try leaving them out of the fridge, some fruit ripens quicker when stored in cold conditions, bananas go black very quickly.0

I pick them over and wash them as soon as I can after getting them home. I then put them in a pyrex bowl and sprinkle sugar over them. The sugar is a preservative and also produces strawberry juice.

Where are you buying them from? If not PYO then you have no idea how old they are. They could have been picked a week ago - if so, they'll perish no matter what you do.
Also, if they get knocked about, they will bruise and go mushy too, so you need to be very careful about getting them home. Don't put them in a bag with other things - carry them separately and perhaps put them on the seat of the car and not in the back with the rest of the shopping.Warning ..... I buy them at Tesco's or Sainsbury's (only English or Scottish ones) and I do the same as exlibris.0

I do this too, but also add a little bit of lemon juice, then cover with cling film or lid and leave in the fridge.
This is a "must try", your strawberries will never have tasted better.
Alternatively you could store them in vodka / brandy / your preferred alcohol and leave for a few months - but don't let the kids at them!0 -
What temperature is your fridge? And where abouts in the fridge are you putting them? It may be simply too cold......Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0
