Daughter wants to be a nurse or Paramedic

Hiya

I'm a student nurse doing the adult branch
I was originally mental health but switched branches
I second the advice given by secondmummy to get some work experience as a HCA first
If coping with bodily fluids isn't your daughters strong point she may struggle
A lot of people go into it thinking it's going to be like casualty
These people soon drop out in the first few months
The course is hard work, both academically (which I'm sure your daughter will cope with seeing as she's already got a degree) as well as practical terms
It's definitely not a course for those who aren't willing to put everything into in
You can't just show up to lectures whenever you feel like it, it really is full time
If you don't show up you don't get your hours signed off, and if you don't get your hours signed off you don't qualify
Your time is split 50/50, so half the time is spent in Uni the other half is spent on placements allocated for you
The placements will depend on the branch she's interested in
There's mental health, adult, child and learning disabilty
The placments I've had so far are 12 weeks at a CAMH inpatient unit
12 weeks on an elderly care ward
At the minute I'm on a prison placement
All in all I love the course and I wouldn't want to be doing anything else
Oh and www.studentnurse.org.uk is an awesome site of she wants more infoFuture Mrs Gerard Butler
