Is it possible to make margarine?

I want to use less butter but I have a problem with some emulsifiers ( esp. lecithin) so avoid a lot of commercial ones. Is there any methods to make butter in to a spread, IYSWIM?

I've come across several people who have said that they leave the butter out to soften and then beat in some olive oil before replacing it back in the fridge - apparently this makes it much easier to spread. Haven't tried it myself, though, so don't know how well it works

You can make butter into spreadable by mixing it with oil, I use sunflower or veg, I find olive oil too strong. Some even mix a bit of water or milk in too to spread it even further.
