Can anyone help? Just done a recipe that needed breadcrumbs and didn't know really where to start. Just shredded a piece of bread but think it was too "new" Has anyone got any ideas - do they freeze as I could prepare some for the freezer if so - and in which case how long do I defrost them?
I'm new to this cooking lark so all advice is welcome! And I don't use my freezer as well as I could so again - advice needed!

Hi!
Yes they do freeze well, I don't tend to defrost them before I use them, but others may do different!**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

I don't defrost them either. I tend to add to a bag of them in the freezer whenever I have stale bread. You can either use the food processor or grate them by hand on the small hole side.0 -
I think the easiest way to make breadcrumbs is in a food processor or blender. If you don't have one though then it is best to either wait for your bread to get stale and then grate it on a cheese grater or toast it first and grate it.
You most certainly can freeze them. I have bags of breadcrumbs and bread cubes for croutons in my freezer.

I always keep breadcrumbs in the freezer, and, likewise, I don't defrost them - they do this as soon as you take them from the freezer. I keep a bag of plain breadcrumbs, one mixed with fresh herbs (coriander is lovely), one with dried herbs, and one with parmesan cheese. Fantastic to have to hand when you're in a rush, with chicken or pork. I also keep some already done chicken in the freezer, but I find this needs to be open frozen first, before going into a bag.0

A stick blender is brilliant for whizzing up breadcrumbs in no time at all - even from a fresh loaf. I use mine all the time for that purpose.
Alternatively, if the bread is "too fresh" and you have no stick blender, you could stick a slice or two in a v. low oven for about fifteen minutes, pop it in a sandwich bag then beat the hell out of it with a rolling pin or other such blunt implementI am the leading lady in the movie of my life
