Secret sauce!

Hi all
I had lunch in a turkish restaurant yesterday and they brought us a complimentary starter of chargrilled onions in a "secret sauce". Well it was the most delicious thing and I'd love to figure out the recipe. The waitress refused to divulge any info. It was red and slightly tart so I'm guessing at something like a mild red vinegar, olive oil and maybe the juices from the onions. But it was really lovely and that doesn't seem enough. Even my fussy 12 yr old loved it.
Anyone recognise this dish?

don't think it was tomato - seemed too thin - unless a bit of tomato juice? Was certainly an element of sweetness that could come from tomatoes0

thank you I have bookmarked that site - the ketchup sauce is a possibility0

Depending on where you live - if there is a turkish supermarket in visiting distance might be worth checking it out - if it's a well known sauce, versions of it are probably available in a bottle. Might be worth googling for an online store.
A thought about ingredients - that tangy but sweet kind of taste may be pomegranate or pomegranate molasses in the sauce somewhere. Would account for the red colour as well I think.0
